Ta-Nehisi Coates
Ta-Nehisi Coates grew up in Baltimore and attended Howard University. He is the distinguished writer in residence at NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and a winner of the National Book Award. Coates' book Between the World and Me began as a letter to his teenage son about what it means to live in a black body in America, and about the injustice that his son will surely find. He admonishes him to consider the history of slavery, and to, “remember this past in all its nuance, error and humanity.” He challenges the reader to accept this history, but he offers no solutions.
